We are Don & Cindy Cadle, longtime residents of New Port Richey, FL. In 2002 we purchased the 80 acre “Hampton Place” in Greenville, FL. The property had been in the Hampton family since the late 1800’s, as evidenced by old tax records we found in a crumbling, camelback trunk. They worked the land and grew cotton, tobacco & peanuts. They also had livestock; in the trunk was a document showing the use of their mule as collateral for leasing additional land to farm. We hope to learn more about the history of the farm and the family in the future.
Don enjoyed deer hunting in the area and our intention was to enjoy the country life on weekends as a family retreat. In October of 2010 we went on the New Leaf Market North Florida Farm Tour and enjoyed visiting several small farms in the Monticello/Tallahassee area.
We were so inspired by the tour that we went back and started a garden on our property. We quickly learned that it takes more than desire to grow vegetables and our garden was a flop.
Still wanting to farm, in January 2011 Cindy signed up for a Organic Farming Course taught by Lynn Pugh of Cane Creek Farm in Cumming, GA, sponsored by Georgia Organics, Inc. The 7 Saturdays spent on Lynns farm did the trick in providing hands-on knowledge and additional inspiration to get us up and running with success! With much to be learned, Cindy enjoys attending farmer workshops and has joined the Red Hills Small Farms Alliance (www.rhomarket.com) as well as events sponsored by the University of Florida Small Farms Institute and Florida Organic Growers (FOG). Cindy is also a member of Georgia Organics, Inc., an excellent resource of helpful information.
Farming is Cindy’s dream and we are working on the farm most weekends. Don stays busy in New Port Richey during the week at his downtown dental practice, www.cadlecosmeticdentistry.com, and serving as current president of the Rotary Club of New Port Richey.
In our market garden we enjoy growing seasonal vegetables, herbs and wildflowers. In the old barn we have are growing Shiitake & Oyster Mushrooms. We have planted a cover-crop in a second field which will be additional garden space in the spring. Plans for an orchard and expanding our blueberry & blackberry area are in the works.
We are small but we are mighty and look forward to expanding our fields with each growing season!
